Children's Trade
Books in this category vary in subject matter and are created primarily for young people. They may be highly illustrated or may have innovative nontraditional elements. They may feature attachments that support the editorial content and promote participation and experimentation. Elements intended to support the editorial content of these books must be incorporated into the book or be physically attached. Many channels may be used to market these books including bookstores, catalogues, and the internet. EIGHT subcategories:

General Trade
This category includes books that are published primarily for their text content. They also may contain illustrations and photo sections. The category includes, but is not limited to, books of general interest, religious/spiritual titles, illustrated how-to books, technical books, and health and fitness guides. Four subcategories:
a. Hardcover: Fiction
b. Hardcover: Nonfiction
c. Mass Market (cover only)
d. Quality Paperback (original publications or those redesigned from hardcover editions)
Special Trade
Books in this category are designed to maximize their illustrative appeal and include, but are not limited to, books of photography or art, highly illustrated books, cookbooks with photographic illustration, and museum guide books. Subject matter may be highly specialized or of a general nature. EIGHT subcategories:
a. General (includes books on crafts, travel, gardening, hobbies and style/fashion)
b. Photography
c. Cookbook
d. Fine Art/Under or Equal to $75 retail
e. Fine Art/Over $75 retail
f. Gift Book (may have unusual size or elements and may be sold off of floor or counter display)
g. Graphic Novel/Adult
h. Poetry
Scholarly & Professional
Books containing scholarly, reference and professional material including history, psychology, culture, regional studies, biography, science, and medicine. Among other things, these can be reference books geared towardupper-level graduate students, professionals, or libraries, available through such means as the Internet or Direct Mail, but not available through the general trade.etc. Three subcategories:
a. Multicolor (text)
b. One or two color (text)
c. Business Books
School Publishing
Textbooks intended for classroom use and purchased by schools and/or undergraduate students. Five subcategories:
a. Elementary
b. Middle/High School
c. College (includes titles for vocational or adult education use)
d. Ancillary
e. School Library Series
talogues designed for the purposes of marketing a publisher’s available items such as Seasonal Catalogues, Sales Catalogues, and Genre Catalogues.
